Chicken with Plums is Marjan Satrapi’s second film based on the graphic novel of the same name. The movie is set in the Shah’s Iran where politics and religion play a menial role in the story. Nasser Ali, the violinist from a rich middle class family in Iran meets the love of his life in a clock shop. Abruptly denied Irane’s hand by her father, Nasser Ali falls into a deep depression. He decides to commit suicide after his wife destroys his beloved violin, with which he truly connected during his courtship of Irane, in a fit of jealously and rage. Lightly sprinkled with surrealist animation, we are transported back and forth in the main character’s memory – from childhood to adolescence and adulthood. A romantic black comedy with elements of surprise and magic. Recommended to lovers of Iranian cinema and romantic tales with a twist.
