Garbage Dreams

Adam, Osama and Nabil live in one of Cairo’s most notorious slums – home of the Zabeleen (rubbish people). Living, working and breathing in the fumes of a town overrun by waste, its children begin work as soon as possible collecting refuse from neighbouring areas to bring home. Dependent upon this cheap service, the young boys are paid little for their work by but make up some loss by recycling almost 80% of the rubbish.  Garbage Dreams is a candid documentary on the ingenious poverty can inspire and the harsh consequences rapid capitalisation and globalisation has wracked upon Egyptians. It is hard to watch as these three boys battle with their duties, their desires and their struggles – accepting the harsh reality that society and government prescribe them no real alternative.

Highly recommended 5/5.
